TAMIU Receives $100,000 Grant with Matching Opportunity

Texas A&M International University has been named the recipient of a $100,000 “Removing Educational Barriers Scholarship Program” grant from the Greater Texas Foundation.

Candy Hein, TAMIU vice president for institutional advancement, said the grant challenges receiving four-year post-secondary institutions to match its gift within a fiscal year.

“It’s a tremendous opportunity for us and one that we are aggressively pursuing with like-minded donors and partners.  We have found our donors are quite keen to double their gift and increase its impact for students.

“We’ll need to have the match in place by Dec. 31, 2007.  To date, we’ve already secured $25,000 through a donation by Conoco-Phillips, leaving us with $75,000 to go,” she explained.

Hein said the grant funds student scholarships at the University.

“Nearly 80 percent of our student body receives financial assistance, so an opportunity like this is much appreciated.  We have also benefited from previous grants from the Greater Texas Foundation and are honored and delighted to be partnering with them again,” she said.

The Bryan, Texas, Greater Texas Foundation supports excellence in education through increased access for all Texans and improved educational quality through public-private partnerships.

Its predecessor, the Greater Texas Student Loan Corporation, elected to convert from an entity issuing tax-exempt bonds to one with a greatly expanded charitable purpose.
