Make plans to attend the multi-media exhibit by a former nurse - the first art exhibit of the Texas A&M International University 2007 Fall semester.

The exhibit, Georgia Tambasis's “Mutations,” will open with a reception on Thursday, Sept. 6 from 5 - 8 p.m. in the TAMIU Center for the Fine and Performing Arts Gallery.

This reception and exhibit is free and open to the public and will be on display through Thursday, Oct. 11. The reception also includes a discussion by the artist.

“Mutations” is a collection of ceramic sculptures, drawings and paintings by Tambasis. Her work consists primarily of colored slates of clay, organized and stacked on various wooden and steel structures.

This exhibit is sponsored in part by Time Warner Cable.

“Stacks and layers are not reduced to a simple process of organization or compulsion. Rather the stacks create an awareness of time. Time is recollected,” Tambasis writes in her artist's statement.

Born in Tselepakou, Greece, she immigrated with her family to the U.S. in 1973. She attended Thiel College in Greenville, Penn., and graduated in 1985 with a B.S.N. Even though she pursued a nursing career for 12 years, her interest in art persisted and she participated in local exhibits. In 1997, she retired from nursing in order to study art full time. Tambasis earned a B.F.A. from Youngstown State University in 2001, with a concentration in ceramics and sculpture. She received her M.F.A. from the University of Texas in San Antonio in December 2003.

Her most recent solo exhibitions include “Flutter” at Laredo Center for the Arts, “Disturbances in the Field” at Three Walls and “Prickly Sweet” at the University of Texas at San Antonio Satellite Space and exhibits at the McDonough Museum of Art, Youngstown, Ohio and Blue Star Contemporary Art Center in San Antonio.

Tambasis currently lives and works in Wheeling, West Viriginia.
