Sharkey-Corrigan Recital Series Returns Sept. 23

More joyful noise will resonate through Texas A&M International University’s Center for the Fine and Performing Arts Recital Hall on Sunday, Sept. 23 at 4 p.m. with the 2007-2008 Sharkey-Corrigan Organ Recital Series.

This event is free and open to the public.

The first installment of the Series will be performed by Mariko Morita, TAMIU visiting assistant professor of music.

Her program for the afternoon includes: Piéce d’Orgue in G Major, BWV572 and Schmücke dich O liebe Seele, BWV654 by Johann Sebastian Bach, Piéce Heroïque by Cesar Franck, Le Banquet céleste by Olivier Messiaen, Praeludium in A Minor, BuxWV158 by Dietrich Buxtehude, “Toccata” from Symphony V in G Minor, Op.42, No. 5 by Charles-Marie Widor and three short chorale preludes by Johann Matthias Michel: “Joy to the World,” “Holy, Holy, Holy” and “Go Tell It on the Mountain.”

Born in Nagoya, Aichi, Japan, Morita earned a Bachelor of Music in Sacred Music in Organ Performance at Seton Hill College in Greensburg, PA. A Graduate Award Fellowship recipient, she received her Master of Sacred Music in Organ Performance from Emory University in Atlanta, GA. She is a Doctor of Music candidate in Organ Performance and Literature at the Indiana University School of Music in Bloomington, Ind.

The Sharkey-Corrigan Organ was a gift of the E. H. Corrigan Foundation, lead by longtime Laredo businessman E. H. Corrigan, passionate supporter of the arts. Corrigan has said his gift is a statement of an affection for his hometown and intended to provide this area with one of the finest pipe organs, making real its musical riches for generations to come.
