The Laredo Philharmonic Orchestra’s first concert of its 28th Concert Season, “Myths and Legends,” will be presented this Sunday at 4 p.m. at Laredo Community College’s Martînez Fine Arts Center.

This concert will bring to musical life the mythological tales of Bellerophon taming the winged horse Pegasus and the Irish story of Fionn Mac Cuhaill and the Battle for Brosna, written for the LPO by the brother of Brendan Townsend, LPO director and conductor.

“It is a marvelous personal thrill for me to bring my brother Peadar’s music to the stage of Laredo,” said Brendan Townsend, LPO director and conductor, “This is a world premiere of this work—something which is a great moment in any orchestra's life.”

Tickets for the LPO concerts and season tickets can be purchased at the Laredo Center for the Arts, 500 San Agustîn, by calling 956.725.1517 or can be reserved by calling the LPO office at 956.326.3039. Tickets are also available at the door.

Individual tickets are $25 for adults and $17 for seniors 62 years of age and up. Season tickets are $100 for adults and $85 for seniors 62 years of age and up. For those who have not purchased season tickets in the past two years, a 50 percent discount is available on new season ticket purchases.

LCC and TAMIU students can attend LPO concerts free of charge when they present current photo ID.

In June, the Orchestra was awarded the 2007 ASCAP Award for Innovative Programming by the League of American Orchestras, placing the LPO as one of the leading orchestras in the country for its commitment to innovation and the presentation of new works.

The LPO is a collaborative effort between Texas A&M International University and Laredo Community College.
