TAMIU’s A.R. Sanchez Lecture Series Returns Sept. 10

Pulitzer Prize-winning author, Dr. Martin J. Sherwin, is scheduled to give the first Texas A&M International University 2007/2008 A.R. Sánchez Sr. Distinguished Lecture Series on Thursday, Sept. 20 at 7 p.m. in the Center for the Fine and Performing Arts Recital Hall.

This event is free and open to the public.

A dynamic teacher and distinguished lecturer, Dr. Sherwin’s lecture, “Robert Oppenheimer and the Manhattan Project,” is an account of the man known as the father of the atomic bomb.

Dr. Sherwin’s lecture is based on his recent award-winning book, “The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer,” (with Kai Bird). Oppenheimer, a physicist, led the Manhattan Project and the development of the atomic bomb in August 1945.

The book won the 2006 Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award for biography and the English Speaking Union Award.

Sherwin also penned “A World Destroyed: The Atomic Bomb and the Grand Alliance,” an award-winning classic that has been in print continuously for the past 33 years. He is also the founding director and executive producer of the Global Classroom Project—a “space bridge” program that used satellite technology to link his students with university students in Moscow for interactive discussions on the nuclear arms race and the environment.

Sherwin joined the faculty of George Mason University (GMU) in Fall 2007 where he is University Professor of History. Prior to joining GMU, he was the Walter S. Dickson Professor of English and American History at Tufts University for 27 years.
