Texas A&M International University has set a historic first this Fall: enrollment has topped 5,000 students for the first time, officials announced in a Monday event at the Student Center rotunda.

Fall 2007 enrollment is 5,188, up 5.51% over last Fall’s enrollment of 4,917. Semester Credit Hours (SCH), upon which State funding is based, has grown 6.59% to 52,176 over last Fall’s 48,951.

On hand for Monday’s announcement was Selma Lopez, a graduate student from Bruni, who is the University’s 5000th student.  She and president Ray Keck helped cut a celebratory cake bearing “5000” for students and guests.

TAMIU was the only A&M campus in South Texas to report an enrollment increase. Sister institutions TAMU-Corpus Christi and TAMU-Kingsville reported enrollment drops of .2 percent and 2.2 percent, respectively.

The figures are pending final certification by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, but bodes well for the University, said TAMIU president Ray Keck.

“It’s clear that more students are making TAMIU their choice for higher education. We have a state-of-the-art, growing campus with a gifted faculty and programs that are richly relevant to our students. We just opened our $12.5 million Kinesiology, Wellness and Recreation Center and broke ground for our $22.5 million Student Success Center. It’s a momentous time in our University’s history as a regional University of choice,” Dr. Keck said.

He attributes the increase to the University’s strong recruitment efforts and aggressive multi-media marketing campaign.

“Our staff works tirelessly to be there for students and to help them realize higher education is here for them.  Our marketing efforts bring that message into homes daily through bold, integrated and strategic initiatives,” he said.

This semester at TAMIU, undergraduate students number 4,123 or 80 percent of students, while graduate students number 1,065 or 20 percent of students.
