Alternative Teaching Certification Information Session at TAMIU Tuesday, Nov. 27

Making a difference in children's lives, longer summer vacations, and high job demand are some of the perks of becoming a teacher and if you're interested in exploring the education profession, Texas A&M International University invites you to a free information session Tuesday, Nov. 27 from 6-7:30 p.m. in Bob Bullock Hall 113.

The Alternative Teacher Certification Program  (ACP) information session, will tell participants what they need to know to get certified as a teacher and how TAMIU's program can help with test preparation workshops, classes, scholarships and a child care stipend for working parents.

Elizabeth Greninger, Alternative Certification Program director, said test preparation workshops will begin in January and that those interested must hold a bachelor's degree.

"The benefit of participating in the ACP program at TAMIU is that in addition to preparing them for the test preparation workshops, students will get to take four University courses that will help strengthen their teaching career," Greninger said.

Participants will also receive assistance and guidance from experienced TAMIU mentors who will visit each new teacher at their respective campuses during their first year to provide support.

Teachers are currently in high demand in the areas of special education, math and science, Greninger said.

"We often get calls from school districts looking desperately for teachers in these subject areas because there are vacant positions that have not been filled."

Once certified by the State of Texas, teachers can relocate anywhere in the state, Greninger said, adding that large cities like Austin and Dallas are in special need of bilingual teachers, which Laredo has in abundance.

The ACP program is designed for those seeking teaching either as a first career or as a change in profession, Greninger said.

"There are even people who are retired and start teaching as a second career," Greninger said, "For example, we currently have a retired Border Patrol agent and a retired Health and Human Services employee that are participating in our program.
