Have you ever wanted to anchor the nightly news, DJ at a radio station, or perhaps handle public relations for your favorite sports team?  All these jobs can be within your reach with a communication degree.

On Tuesday, Nov. 20, Texas A&M International University's (TAMIU) Communication Program, in conjunction with TAMIU assistant professor Dr. Lynda Brown's public relations class, will host the first annual Communication Program Open House, "Pathways to Endless Possibilities."  This event is free and open to the public from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. in Student Center (SC) ballroom, room SC-203.

This Open House is for students interested in learning about career opportunities in Communication. It is hosted by public relations students as part of a class PR campaign project taught by Dr. Brown. Open House visitors will learn about attending TAMIU and the communication program, while also enjoying food, beverages, and give-aways.

Not a Communication major?  Student organizers say the Open House offers a great opportunity to explore the diverse field with an impressive collection of guest speakers.

Joining students at the Open House will be Tim Gutiérrez, managing editor and anchor for KGNS; Ann Hutyra, KGNS evening anchor; Miguel Villarreal, Vice President of Marketing for BMP Radio;  Belinda Guerra, President of Guerra Communications, and Steve Harmon, director of TAMIU's Office of Public Relations, Marketing and Information Services.

Esmeralda López, a junior in the TAMIU communication program, said the Open House is an exciting opportunity.

"I am so excited that something like this is taking place.  It will be a great opportunity to get informed and network with other communication students. Students already in the program are excited about this event and are inviting students of all majors to come and partake in the activities and discover what exciting possibilities may await them," López explained.

Traci Melendez, one of the student Open House campaign managers, said the experience has been beneficial because of its real-world orientation.

"As one of the campaign managers, it is really a great experience to gain insight into the real world of a PR campaign. With the guidance of Dr. Brown, our class will have gained invaluable instruction and hands-on experience on how to work together to successfully complete a project," Melendez said.

In addition to guest speakers, PR students will present a speech about the event, show PSAs they created, and a longer video about the Communication field.

Current event sponsors include: Macy's, Guerra Communications, Laredo Bucks, KGNS, Univision and FOX, TAMIU Communication Program, and BMP Radio.

Melendez encouraged those having questions, concerns, or sponsorship interest to contact her at 286-0379 or e-mail tracirthompson@students.tamiu.edu.  _- This story by Elizabeth Dovalina, TAMIU student.
