‘Music and Friends’ Friday at TAMIU

A little music and some friends will go a long way with the “Music and Friends” concert at Texas A&M International University Friday at 7 p.m. in the Center for the Fine and Performing Arts (CFPA) Recital Hall.

Admission is free and open to the public.

Performers include: Dr. Yu-Mei Huang (violin), Dr. Susan Berdahl (flute), Dr. Wan-Shu Huang (piano) and Dr. Xiaohu Zhou (bassoon), all graduates from the University of Miami, Coral Gables.

All of the performers will be doing two solo pieces, from Baroque to late romantic style.

Dr. Yu-Mei Huang, a native of Taipei and assistant professor of upper strings, won first prize on Violin Performance Competition in Taiwan when she was 15. An outstanding soloist and chamber musician, she has given numerous performances across Asia and the U.S., founded the TAMIU International Chamber Festival and joined the Laredo Philharmonic Orchestra as concertmistress in 2005. She earned her Doctorate of Musical Arts degree in piano performance at the University of Miami.

Dr. Wan-Shu Huang, also a native of Taipei, began her musical studies at the age of four and has presented as a piano concert artist throughout Asia and the United States. She graduated from Florida International University and earned her master's degree in accompany and chamber music and her Doctorate of Music Arts degree in piano performance at University of Miami.

Dr. Zhou, adjunct instructor of music/bassoon, oboe and clarinet, began his bassoon studies in his native Nanjing, People's Republic of China. Zhou has performed with the Jiansu Province Symphony Orchestra, Winston-Salem Symphony Orchestra, the Florida Philharmonic and the New World Symphony. He is currently the principal bassoonist for the Laredo Philharmonic Orchestra. He studied at the North Carolina School of the Arts and the Conservatory of Lynn University, where he graduated with a B.M. Zhou received his M.M. and Doctorate of Music Arts from the University of Miami.

Dr. Berdahl, associate professor of music, joined TAMIU in Fall 2002. She directed the Third International Flute Festival for Central Americas in Tegucigalpa, Honduras in 2006. Berdahl founded the Festival in 2002 under the auspices of the J. William Fulbright Foundation. She holds a Ph.D. in musicology from the University of Minnesota, in Minneapolis, Minn., and an M.M. in flute performance from the University of Miami. Berdahl earned her B.M. in music education at the University of Iowa.
