Whether you celebrate the season with a dreidel, Christmas tree, Yule log, presents from the Magi or with a wag of a tail, the season is sometimes dark and cold for those less fortunate.

The following are a list of toy, clothing, blanket or miscellaneous drives. Not all are asking for toys, or items that require batteries or money.

Donate toys that don’t require batteries today, Dec. 6 from 9 a.m. – 10 p.m. Local Univision affiliate, KLDO, is hosting this toy drive. For more information, contact Angel Covarrubias, producer/director at 337.3318.

Donate gently used clean blankets, sweaters or jackets in all sizes to Cover Laredo 2007. This drive, sponsored by the Texas A&M International University Student Government, will be accepting donations through Friday, Dec. 7. Drop off donations at any of the conveniently located stations at TAMIU in the Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library, Residential Learning Community Clubhouse, Student Center, room 224. The Mall del Norte will also host a station through Thursday, Dec. 6 at the JC Penney Court. For more information, call the SG office at 326.2265.

Four legged critters can also benefit from the community’s generosity. Ana Clamont and Daniel Tijerina, graphic designers at the Office of Public Relations, Marketing and Information Services, are asking the community to donate gently used, but clean, blankets, linens and towels to augment the animals’ natural fur coats during the bitter cold weather. Donate at the Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library, room 268 starting today, Dec. 6 through Thursday, Dec. 20. Call Clamont at 326.2182 or Tijerina at 326.2185 for more information. All donations will be taken to the Laredo Animal Shelter.

The Second Annual Mission: Give Laredo benefiting Bethany House will be held Saturday, Dec. 8 from 8 a.m. – 8 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 9.  from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. Suggested donation items include: non-perishable food items, sample-size toiletry items, new socks and undergarments, coats and blankets, books and shoes, blue jeans, sleeping bags, clothing, baby items, toys, bottled water, cash and anything that is in good condition that you’d like to share. If you have donations, please stop by the main Sames Motor dealership on I-35. A convenient drive-thru set up will be at the north end of the complex.

TAMIU’s Office of Information Technology Lab Technicians, together with the Scouts of Nuevo Laredo, will collect gifts for the children of Nuevo Laredo. Gifts that you donate will be delivered to children living in the farthest and poorest zones of Nuevo Laredo, known as Reservas Territoriales and Nueva Era between Christmas and New Year. Donate gifts through Dec. 14 in Cowart Hall 115 Monday - Friday from 8 a.m. - 10 p.m. For more information, please contact Roberto Gonzalez, OIT media services coordinator, at 326-2312 or e-mail roberto@tamiu.edu

If money and resources are tight, then you might consider giving some of your time to the 600 needy children coming to our campus for “Navidad en El Barrio.” Volunteers are needed to wrap approximately 3000 gifts Monday, Dec. 17 starting at 8 a.m. The presents will be distributed the following day, so your help is really needed. For more information or if you have extra paper, scissors, tape or sticker labels that you would like to donate, please contact Cynthia S. Garcia, TAMIU Police, at 326.2104 or e-mail cgarcia@tamiu.edu
