TAMIU Posts Record Spring Enrollment Growth

More students are getting what they want out of life at Texas A&M International University (TAMIU), according to Spring 2008 20th Class Day enrollment figures reported to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board this week.

Final enrollment figures show TAMIU Spring enrollment is 5,023, up 7.51% from last Spring’s 4,671 students. Semester Credit Hours (SCH), upon which State funding is based, totaled 50,080— up 8.49% from last Spring’s 46,159.

At 7.5%, TAMIU’s enrollment growth is also the highest among The Texas A&M University System campuses. Other campuses showing growth included Prairie View A&M University (3.6%); Texas A&M University (3.2%) and Tarleton State University (2.5%) .  Other southern System campuses saw small enrollment declines.

Dr. Ray Keck, TAMIU president, said that the increases are especially impressive as they are occurring in the Spring semester and bode well for the Base Year beginning this summer. Traditionally, enrollment and SCH growth occurs in Fall semesters.

“Clearly, higher enrollment and greater SCH means we're delivering our mission of higher education. These increases bode especially well as this Legislature considers higher education funding and gauges universities’ performances in  the state-wide ‘Closing the Gaps’ mandate. TAMIU is a state-wide success story, made possible by the Legislature and fueled by the combined blessings of strong community support and partnerships that encourage our committed students to pursue their dreams here,” Dr. Keck said.

He provided additional information on TAMIU Spring Semester 2008 enrollment: full-time students comprise 53% (2,676) of the Spring combined undergraduate/graduate enrollment, while 47%  (2,347) are part-time.

The College of Arts and Sciences has the highest enrollment with 2,205 students (44%). The College of Education follows with 1,354 (27%) and the College of Business Administration with 1,158 (23%). The most popular undergraduate majors are early childhood (education), criminal justice and nursing. 

The most popular graduate programs are educational administration, school counseling and special education. Among fastest growing programs are early childhood (undergraduate) and school counseling (graduate).

The average overall student age is 23 (undergraduate) and 32 (graduate). The youngest student is 14 while the oldest is 74.  Females outnumber males 63% (3,189) to 37% (1,834).

Minority enrollment is 90% Hispanic, .74% Black and .46% Asian.  Ninety-four percent of students are In-State residents, but 4.7% of the University's combined undergraduate and graduate enrollment is international.

Online registration for the University’s Maymester, Summer Sessions and Fall 2008 begins April 7, 2008 via UOnline at tamiu.edu. Maymester classes begin May 12 and end May 30. Summer Session I classes start June 2 and end July 3. Summer Session II classes begin July 7 and end Aug. 7.

Summer Session III classes begin June 2 and end Aug. 7.  Fall 2008 classes begin Aug. 25, 2008 and end Dec. 13, 2008. For registration information, visit the Office of the University Registrar at tamiu.edu/affairs/registrar
