Student Academic Conference Winners at TAMIU Named

Texas A&M International University students participated in the College of Arts and Sciences Sixth Annual Guillermo Benavides Z Academic Conference March 27 - March 28.

This year, 75 students participated in the Conference, providing presenters and attendees an insight to other studies ranging from health issues, math and science, creative writing and different approaches in creative arts.

The Conference allows undergraduate and graduate students from the College of Arts and Sciences to showcase their learnings at an academic conference. The Conference was an extraordinary opportunity for TAMIU students to present their works, ideas, research, strategies and creativities.

Conference co-chairs, Dr. David Beck, assistant professor of biology and Dr. Kevin Lindberg, assistant professor of English, announced the Conference winners.

Janel R. Longoria, psychology, was named the overall Grand Prize winner for her presentation, “Cohabitation and Marriage: Trends, Interactions & Implications.”

The subject area winners in the Conference were: Oscar Widales for his presentation in math: “Perfection in Mathematics: The Case for Perfect Numbers”; Jorge García for his presentation in creative writing: “Four Poems”; Monica Luna for her presentation in literature: “Death of a
Salesman's Willy Loman and Fight Club's Narrator: Lonely But Not Alone.”

Also, Cristina Martínez for her presentation in biology and chemistry: “Dengue”; Oscar Widales for his presentation in social sciences: “Usage of Social Networking Web sites by University Students in Laredo, Texas: A Quantitative Analysis” and Mohsen K. Omar for his presentation in political science: “The Middle East and U.S. Policy: The Arab Reality, the American Response since the Cold War.”
