“The International Guitar Concert was born with the objective to perform music and styles from different countries,” said Dr. Gilberto D. Soto, professor of music education/guitar and director of the TAMIU Guitar Ensemble.

“Some of the countries represented in this concert will include the United States, Spain, Germany, México, Argentina, England, and Cuba, among others,” Dr. Soto explained.

The program also includes two selections in which for the first time the Sharkey-Corrigan Organ will join the ensemble—“Sleepers Awake” from Germany and “Recuerdos de la Alhambra”, from Spain.
Mariko Morita, visiting assistant professor of music, will accompany on the Sharkey-Corrigan Organ.
Other selections included in the program are “Huapango” and “Danza Maya” from México, “Tango” from Argentina and “In the Mood” from the United States.

“The TAMIU Classical Guitar Ensemble is a group of mostly music guitar majors and minors, as well as other instrumentalists who share experience in reading and performing of guitar literature for instrumental ensembles,” said Soto.

Members of the ensemble are Billy Thatcher, Aileen González, Salvador Bella, Audrey L. Esparza, Joshua D. Orr, Juan M. Peña, Jessica Vásquez, Alfredo J. Barrera, Israel Cruz Villarreal, Miguel A. Durán, René O. Durán, Miguel A. Saito, Faustino Santos, Manuel Torres González, Jorge García and Joseph Salinas.

The ensemble is a favorite guest performer at many civic and community events throughout the year.

Other special guest performers who will join the ensemble towards the end of the concert include the Vidal M. Treviño Magnet School International Guitars, the TAMIU Early College High School Program guitar students and other young guitar students from Soto Academy of Music.
