To raise money for scholarships, Texas A&M International University will hold a phonathon Wednesday, April 9 from 9:30 a.m. – 9 p.m.

University volunteers will call local businesses asking for donations for unrestricted scholarships.

TAMIU is turning to the community and approaching local businesses and corporations, especially those that have benefited from hiring TAMIU graduates, in an effort to raise scholarship monies.

TAMIU officials can proudly boast one of the highest retention rates in the State—70 percent of students continue on to complete their undergraduate studies at TAMIU.

But that impressive retention rate, coupled with the University’s 39 percent enrollment growth over the past five years, now drains the University’s scholarship pool.

The University has received federal funds and donations from private philanthropy, but increases in tuition, fees and book expenses, combined with the University’s enviable retention rate and enrollment growth have created the need raise additional money for scholarships.

The goal for this initiative is $250,000.

Businesses interested in donating should call Candy Hein, vice president, TAMIU Office of the Vice President for Institutional Advancement, at 326.2175 or e-mail chein@tamiu.edu, visit online at www.tamiu.edu/adminis/vpia/?id=2 or visit offices in the Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library, room 262B.

TAMIU alumni or staff interested in volunteering their cheery phone services for an hour or two should also contact Hein.

University office hours are 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., Monday – Friday.

Journalists who need additional information or help with media requests and interviews should contact the Office of Public Relations, Marketing and Information Services at prmis@tamiu.edu
