The Texas A&M International University Small Business Development Center (TAMIU-SBDC) will provide a three-part series targeted toward small businesses that are looking to expand or hire employees for the first-time.

The series will start on Tuesday, April 22, 2008, from 9:30 a.m.-1 p.m. at TAMIU’s Western Hemispheric Trade Center (WHTC), room 103. Registration fee is $30 for each session. Register for the entire series and save $15.

First Part:
Employees 101: Doing it Right from the Beginning-The Employment Lifecycle, April 22 from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in WHTC room 103

Learn about establishing procedures for legally recruiting, hiring, developing, disciplining and terminating employees. What’s needed to get started and maintain good practices throughout the employee lifecycle. Areas discussed will include: required forms; personnel files; applications and background checks; employee orientation and development; evaluating employee performance; progressive discipline strategies; the termination process.

Second Part:
Small Business Employee Handbook Clinic, May 6 from 9:30 to 4:00 p.m. at Pellegrino Hall room 221

Utilizing an electronic template, each attendee will be able to create or revise their personnel policies with the direction and assistance of Human Capital staff. Small business owners regularly indicate that they feel that employee handbooks and written policies are important and would be valuable to their organizations, but are unable find the time to work on them. This clinic will allow time to focus efforts, without the interruptions that occur all the time in small businesses.

Attendees of this clinic will identify the key elements of an employee handbook; determine the federal and state regulations that apply to your company; consider the policies you want to include in your “house rules” portion of the handbook; create or revise your handbook using a computer and handbook template provided for this class and receive assistance in developing your handbook and a critique when it is competed.

Third Part:
Job Descriptions and Performance Appraisal Clinic, May 27 from 9:30 to 1:00 p.m. at the Pellegrino Hall room 221

The clinic is designed to provide information and hands-on templates for developing competency based job descriptions and performance appraisal processes. Keep current with judicial leanings regarding the connection between well-defined job descriptions and the ADA and the importance of job descriptions on performance appraisal and progressive discipline.

Included in the training are determining what policies and procedures should be put in place; legal considerations to keep in mind when developing job descriptions; developing job descriptions and recruiting materials; the role of orientation, communication, coaching and supervision in making systems work.

Deirdre Pattillo from the South-West Texas Border Region SBDC Human Capital Program will be conducting the three part series.
