TAMIU SBDC Offers Three-Part Series on HR Issues Tuesday

A three-part series targeted toward small businesses that are looking to expand or hire employees for the first-time will be offered by Texas A&M International University’s Small Business Development Center (TAMIU-SBDC).

The series will start on Tuesday, April 22, 2008 from 9:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m. at TAMIU’s Western Hemispheric Trade Center (WHTC), room 103. Registration fee is $30 for each session. Register for the entire series and save $15.

First Part: April 22 from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in WHTC 103
Employees 101: Doing it Right from the Beginning-The Employment Lifecycle.

Learn about establishing procedures for legally recruiting, hiring, developing, disciplining and terminating employees. What’s needed to get started and maintain good practices throughout the employee lifecycle?

Small Business Employee Handbook Clinic

Utilizing an electronic template, each attendee will be able to create or revise their personnel policies with the direction and assistance of Human Capital staff. Small business owners regularly indicate that they feel that employee handbooks and written policies are important and would be valuable to their organizations, but are unable find the time to work on them. This clinic will allow time to focus efforts, without the interruptions that occur all the time in small businesses.

Third Part: May 27 from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., PH 221
Job Descriptions and Performance Appraisal Clinic

The clinic is designed to provide information and hands-on templates for developing competency based job descriptions and performance appraisal processes. Keep current with judicial leanings regarding the connection between well-defined job descriptions and the ADA and the importance of job descriptions on performance appraisal and progressive discipline.

Deirdre Pattillo from the South-West Texas Border Region SBDC Human Capital Program will be conducting the three part series.
