TAMIU ‘Social Thinking’ Seminar Saturday

Providers or parents of children with communications disorders and children with communications disorders will want to attend Saturday’s Texas A&M International University Communications Disorders Center’s seminar “Social Thinking” for providers or “Speech-Language Camp” for children.
“Social Thinking” is scheduled for Saturday, May 31 from 10 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. at the Western Hemispheric Trade Center, room 116.

“Social Thinking is an evidence-based technique that targets social-cognitive deficits exhibited by persons with Asperger Syndrome, high functioning autism, PDD-NOS, non-verbal learning disabilities, hyperlexia and other similar disorders,” explained Melissa P. García, clinical assistant professor of communication disorders.

Target audiences includes speech language pathologists, special education teachers, teachers, school personnel, service providers and parents. There is no fee for this seminar.

Registration is underway for the TAMIU Communications Disorders Center Speech-Language Camp for children diagnosed with speech-language disorders. The Communication Disorders Center will also be providing individual therapy sessions during June.

“The purpose of the Camp is to integrate intensive speech-language skills within a fun environment,” García said.

The camp runs from Monday, June 2 – Thursday, June 26, Monday through Thursday from 9 – 11 a.m.

Camp fees are $320 for the four weeks. Children who are unable to attend all four weeks may still participate for a rate of $20 per day. Fees for individual therapy sessions are $10 for a 30-minute session.
