TAMIU International Guitar Concert Friday at TAMIU

This Friday at 8 p.m. international music will fill Texas A&M International University’s Center for the Fine and Performing Arts’ Recital Hall for the Third Annual International Guitar Concert.

Admission is free and open to the public.

“The International Guitar Concert was born with the objective to perform music and styles from different countries,” said Dr. Gilberto D. Soto, professor of music education/guitar and director of the TAMIU Guitar Ensemble.

“Some of the countries represented in this concert include the United States, Spain, Germany, México, Argentina, England, and Cuba, among others,” Dr. Soto explained.

The program also includes two selections in which for the first time the Sharkey-Corrigan Organ will join the ensemble—“Sleepers Awake” from Germany and “Recuerdos de la Alhambra”, from Spain.
Mariko Morita, visiting assistant professor of music, will accompany on the Sharkey-Corrigan Organ.
Other selections included in the program are “Huapango” and “Danza Maya” from México, “Tango” from Argentina and “In the Mood” from the United States.

Members of the ensemble are Billy Thatcher, Aileen González, Salvador Bella, Audrey L. Esparza, Joshua D. Orr, Juan M. Peña, Jessica Vásquez, Alfredo J. Barrera, Israel Cruz Villarreal, Miguel A. Durán, René O. Durán, Miguel A. Saito, Faustino Santos, Manuel Torres González, Jorge García and Joseph Salinas.

Other special guest performers include the Vidal M. Treviño Magnet School International Guitars, the TAMIU Early College High School Program guitar students and other young guitar students from Soto Academy of Music.
