South Texas Writing Project Sets Summer Writing Camps

Budding young writers and students who need to enhance their reading skills will have an opportunity to attend local camps offered by the South Texas Writing Project at TAMIU starting in June. The writing and reading intensive summer youth camps are designed for students in grades
4 – 8.

Register now. Camps are limited to 20 students each.

“Connecting to Border Voices through Writing,” a two-week camp, will teach students to write interesting introductions, use specific concrete details, incorporate sentence variety and dialogue and proofread their work. Campers will meet Monday, June 2 – Thursday, June 12 from 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Tuition is $300. Family discounts are available.

“Tackling TAKS Objective IV in Reading 4 – 8,” a one-week camp, will focus on building students’ critical thinking skills and enhancing their ability to analyze texts. Campers will meet Monday, July 7 – Friday, July 11 from 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

“Tackling TAKS Objective IV in Reading 4 – 8” will also meet Monday, July 14 – Friday, July 18 from 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

Tuition for “Tackling” is $225. Family discounts are also available.

“The Freedom Writer’s Diary: A Personal Journey in Writing,” a one-week camp, will use journal writing techniques patterned after the Freedom Writer model to improve the writing of the students from grades 9 – 12. This camp will meet Monday, July 14 – Thursday, July 17 from 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. This four-day camp costs $200.
