Now on display at Texas A&M International University is “Early American History Through Original Documents,” a historical documents exhibit featured at the TAMIU Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library Special Collections and Archives, room 204.

The “Early American History Through Original Documents” exhibit includes documents such as a note from Benjamin Franklin written in March 1778 to fellow American Commissioner to France Arthur Lee, a letter from George Washington to New York Governor George Clinton in June of 1780, a letter from Thomas Jefferson written in September of 1787 to friend and fellow member of the American Philosophical Society David Rittenhouse, and other historical documents.

The exhibit is made possible by Toni L. Ruiz, with the assistance of the Killam Library’s Special Collections and Archives. The documents featured are part of Ruiz’s personal collection and are on loan to TAMIU.

In addition to the “Early American History Through Original Documents” exhibit, additional displays include the Latino Literary Greats exhibit, Laurie Mann Guerrero Viejo Exhibit, Early American Paper Currency and remains from an old Laredo burial site.

The Latino Literary Greats exhibit is a display of literature by Latino authors ranging from the 1800’s to the late 20th century.

The Laurie Mann exhibit features a series of photographs taken in Guerrero Viejo. This particular exhibit is of significance to local families because of many local ties there.

The Early American Paper Currency exhibit is a display of reproductions of Colonial and Civil War-era money.

The remains from an old Laredo Burial site are the findings of an excavation done in the late 1990s. Artifacts such as jewelry and a crown are among the treasures displayed.
