A special overnight orientation program targeting easing the transition from high school to University will be offered to Texas A&M International University freshmen Thursday and Friday, July 17-18 and Thursday and Friday, Aug. 7-8 in the University’s Student Center.

The “Orientation: Academic Anchoring” program focuses on building new student awareness of the University experience and a new academic world. All incoming, first semester freshmen are required to attend either session and be present for the 1 p.m. check-in on the opening. The sessions run through 5 p.m. the next day and include all meals and housing.

Sessions are limited to 250 students and advance registration is required by calling 956.326.2280. Students who have applied for on-campus housing or apply during the orientations will be entered to win a new computer, bookstore scholarship or additional prizes.

Dennis Koch, TAMIU director of Student Activities, said the program is vital to freshmen students and truly helps engage in a new learning environment.

“The program focuses on helping students turn their attention to why they are coming to the University and outlining for them what is different about University academics. We’re basically showing students the inner workings of academics at TAMIU and how they can ‘anchor’ themselves to academics to ensure their future success here,” Koch explained.

He said “Academic Anchoring” includes an understanding of the structure of the academic community, expectations, the core curriculum, availability of support services to help students succeed and how to get around on the growing campus. There will also be a variety of exciting and enriching activities for everyone.

University summer office hours are from 8 a.m. – 6 p.m. Monday-Thursday and from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Fridays.
