Pre-service teachers have three opportunities to attend training sessions taught by seasoned educators to help them prepare for the upcoming school year. The Hispanic Student Success Initiative’s workshops, “Title V Teacher Mentoring Working Series: Preparing Pre-Service Teachers for Effective Instructional Practices,” will be held at Texas A&M International University Friday, June 6 from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. and from 1 – 4 p.m. in Western Hemispheric Trade Center, room 111.

There is no fee for this workshop. The seminars are made possible through funding provided by the U.S. Department of Education, Developing Hispanic-Serving Institutions Program-Title V.

The seminars include how to incorporate Texas Essential Knowledge of Skills as a component of the training curriculum, hands-on activities that foster critical thinking and questioning strategies.

The sessions are designed to provide a foundational framework of experiences for pre-service teachers. Each seminar is 45 – 90 minutes. Future teachers will receive a demonstration of best teaching practices and effective classroom instruction.

The educators providing the demonstrations are Anita Dodier, Toni Vela, Mary Kathryn Longoria. Dodier has 31 years of educational experience and has a master’s in early childhood. Vela has 29 years of educational experience and has a master’s in psychology and reading. Longoria has 33 years of educational experience and is certified in elementary education and bilingual education.
Two other training dates are also scheduled for Monday, July 21 and Friday, Aug. 1.
