Registration is underway now for a seminar on how to read financial statements offered by the Texas A&M International University Small Business Development Center (TAMIU-SBDC) Wednesday, July 30, 2008, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. in TAMIU Western Hemispheric Trade Center, room 125.

The $20 fee includes a workbook.

Many business owners may not know how to read their business statements and rely on advisors to interpret the results. Their input is valuable, but one must be able to understand statements in order to:

  • Realize the vital role money plays in every business decision
  • Determine if a business is making a profit or losing money
  • Calculate current and future financial needs.

For lending purposes, statements will help determine if a loan is affordable, loan amount and loan term (number of years). It also helps determine which assets one should buy vs. which assets should be financed and what collateral is available to secure a loan.

One statement cannot diagnose a company's financial health, but by putting several statements together, business owners can make smart financial, investment and management decisions.
