Registration is currently underway for speech therapy at Texas A&M International University Communications Disorders Center. Children and adults who exhibit a communication disorder are eligible for services. Services are provided in English and Spanish.

The Center, located in Dr. Billy F. Cowart Hall, room 122, will provide services starting Tuesday, Sept. 2 – Thursday, Dec. 4. Center hours are Monday – Thursday, 9 a.m. – 7 p.m.

“All services are provided by TAMIU communications disorders students under direct supervision of a state and national licensed speech language pathologist,” said Melissa P. García, assistant professor and Clinic director.

“This semester we will coordinate two new types of therapy groups. Language-based playgroups for children ages three and four will meet in the mornings. ‘Social Thinking Groups,’ for children ages four and older who are diagnosed with social cognitive defects such as Asperger Syndrome will be held in the evenings,” García explained.

Depending on the age and diagnoses, therapy may be recommended once a week for 30 to 60 minutes each session.

To qualify for therapy, participants must schedule a speech-language evaluation, however the Clinic will accept current evaluations performed by a licensed Speech Language Pathologist.

There is a nominal fee for diagnostic and therapeutic services. TAMIU employees and their immediate family receive services at no charge.

Communication disorders include stuttering, voice disorders, articulation disorders and language-based disorders. Adults might have a communication disorder as a result of a head injury or stroke. Children might have a communication disorder as a result of starting to talk late or having a language-based disorder.
