Open auditions for the Texas A&M International University Opera Workshop and Laredo Community College Opera Workshop’s joint production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” are scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 16 and Sunday, Aug. 17 from 1 – 4 p.m. at the Martínez Fine Arts Center, room 102, on the LCC Fort McIntosh Campus.

The performance is slated for Thursday, Oct. 16 – Saturday, Oct. 18, 2008.

“The musical is a whimsical and inspiring account of the Bible story of Joseph and the coat of many colors. It features a variety of popular music styles including country, rock and rap. The cast includes a children’s chorus as well as many adult roles in addition to many opportunities for dancers,” announced Dana Crabtree, TAMIU instructor of music and voice.

Singers should prepare one song from memory and take a copy of their sheet music for the accompanist for the audition.

This joint production between TAMIU’s and LCC’s Opera Workshops was conceived as an effort to bring a large-scale production that one institution would have struggled to produce successfully, according to Dr. Joseph Crabtree, opera workshop instructor and chair, LCC performing arts department.

“When looking at the possibilities of shows to take on for this year’s production, both Dana and I wanted to do this show, explained Dr. Crabtree.

“It has been a hit since its inception and we knew that Laredo would love the light-hearted setting and would enjoy the differing musical styles. However, our separate groups would have struggled to mount such a daunting production, so by pooling our resources, we were able to ‘dream’ big and envision a successful experience for all involved,” he continued.

Rehearsals will be held on weeknights from 7:30 – 9:30 p.m.

Enrollment in the opera workshop class at either TAMIU or LCC is required for those eligible to enroll. Students with lower than junior standing in high school are not eligible but may participate if space permits.
