Information on concerts, art gallery exhibits, and theater performances are available by dialing a new Texas A&M International University phone number: 326-ARTS (2787).

The new phone number is designed to provide weekly, up-to-date information on fine and performing arts events happening at TAMIU. Events range from those requiring paid admission to free events.

Bede Leyendecker, assistant professor of dance and Department of Fine and Performing Arts chair, said the new number is being promoted on local radio stations and displayed in Center for the Fine and Performing Arts (CFPA) invitations, posters and programs.

“We are happy to announce 326-ARTS to both the Laredo and Nuevo Laredo community and to invite everyone to dial in to get the most current and accurate information about weekly events occurring here,” she said, “Our family-friendly events showcase guest artists and TAMIU talent, bringing together the artistic experience of faculty members and students from here and abroad.”

The University is fast-becoming the community’s primary focus for truly engaging art and cultural events. For example, it is home to the impressive Sharkey-Corrigan Organ, the Laredo Philharmonic Orchestra and The Laredo Theatre Guild’s recent breath-taking performance of Gore Vidal’s “The Best Man.”

The CFPA has also hosted former Laredoan and Grammy Award winner Poncho Sánchez, who gave a brief performance and class to music students, Leyendecker said.

November and December events at the CFPA range from classical music and dance concerts to traditional Las Posadas and guitar performances, Leyendecker said.

“The Arts line is another resource the community can refer to when considering the next fine and performing arts event to attend,” she said, “We are proud of our modern Center and would like to invite everyone to enjoy the arts at TAMIU, most especially this holiday season.”

The multi-million dollar Center is home to a variety of performance, gallery and exhibit spaces in addition to rehearsal classrooms and studios.

For more information, please call Leyendecker at 326-2649 or e-mail bleyendecker@tamiu.edu. Additional information and a CFPA schedule of events can be found at tamiu.edu/coas/fpa/coe.shtml

University office hours are 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
