Students in grades six through 10 can get an early start in preparing for college-level courses with Texas A&M International University’s 17th annual Texas Prefreshmen Engineering Program (TexPREP) 2009. Applications are currently being accepted through Feb. 12, 2009, for TexPREP 2009.

Applications are available at tamiu.edu/contedu, prep-usa.org/locations/ApplyG/App1-1.asp?site=2 and middle and high school counselors.

“This is an opportunity for high-quality local and middle and high school students to be exposed to college-level mathematics, science and engineering studies. This year’s program will meet from June 1 – July 23, 2009,” said Julissa Garza, program coordinator, TexPREP.

TexPREP aims to increase the number of competently prepared under-represented minority and female students who will ultimately pursue science, math, engineering and technology studies in college by helping these students prepare for pre-college and college level math, science and engineering. Students will also be exposed to professional opportunities in science, math, engineering and technology.

“As is expected in a program of this caliber, space is limited to 160 participants. It is highly competitive,” added Garza.

Student’s application, essay, nomination forms, school grade report and pre-test scores will be used to determine selection to the program. Pre-testing for students is scheduled for Feb. 28 and March 7.

“We will review the completed applications and make selections by April 24, 2009,” said Garza.

“Also this year, we have established a partnership with Laredo Community College’s South campus and will offer TexPREP for first year applicants only and be limited to 100 spaces,” said Garza.

Students going to their second, third or fourth year of PREP will be sent their user name and password so they can apply for the program.

For more information, please contact Garza at 326.2700, e-mail jgarza@tamiu.edu or visit offices in Student Center, room 118.

University hours are 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., Monday – Friday.
