Enjoy hot chocolate, snacks, pictures with Santa, Christmas caroling from local schools and goody bags for kids at the Texas A&M International University Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony Wednesday, Dec. 3 at 7 p.m. in the Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library Front Lawn.

This event is free and open to the public.

“The Lighting Ceremony is one of our many traditions on campus and serves to help the less fortunate through visitors’ donations that go to Cover Laredo, an initiative created by the TAMIU Student Government in 2005. It is a way for our students to serve the community,” explained Miguel Treviño, associate director, TAMIU Office of Student Activities.

Ceremony sponsors, TAMIU’s Campus Activities Board and the TAMIU Student Government, will be accepting donations for Cover Laredo 2008. The public is encouraged to donate jackets, sweaters, blankets, shoes and other winter items.

Choirs from Milton Elementary, Clark Elementary and United High School will sing to fill the air with holiday cheer.

“The Lighting Ceremony is unique because no other place in Laredo exists that offers the unique surroundings that TAMIU has. Surrounded by campus wildlife underneath a canopy of oaks, the Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony will serve to unite the community in holiday spirit and cheer,” said Treviño.

In addition to a nativity scene and lighting, there will be a menorah made by the Congregation Agudas Achim.

The Holiday Tree and lights will remain lit through the first part of January.

University office hours are 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., Monday – Friday.
