TAMIU Ballet Folklorico Sets Concert Feb. 7

Ballet folklórico dancers from Laredo and across the state are getting ready to learn new dances and improve their techniques at the Texas A&M International University 10th Annual Master Folklórico Workshop that culminates with the Folklórico Festival Concert, Saturday, Feb. 7 at 7 p.m. at the TAMIU Center for the Fine and Performing Arts Recital Hall.

Tickets will be available at the door on the day of the event for $10.

“The purpose of the Workshop, which is sponsored by the TAMIU Ballet Folklórico, is to expose students to a dance lesson taught by master folklórico dance teachers, help folklórico dance groups supplement their repertoire of regional dances, provide an opportunity to network with other dance groups and expose the general public to the beauty of Mexican folklórico through public performance,” explained Sandra Leal, director, TAMIU Ballet Folklórico.

“The Festival Concert was created to showcase all the participating groups and new dances and also as a way to keep the workshop costs low for all participants. It also helps defray the cost of hosting the maestros,” added Leal.

This year’s maestros for the Workshop are: This year’s maestros for the Workshop are: Irina Arce, Elia Noemi Marin Reyes  and Ambar González-Lomas.

Groups participating in the Workshop and Concerts are: Ballet Folklórico Viva México, Corpus Christi; Mestizo Escuela de Baile Folklórico, San Antonio; Alcorta’s Folklórico de Corpus Christi, Corpus Christi; Dovalina Elementary School Ballet Folklórico, Laredo; Col. Santos Benavides Elementary Ballet Folklórico, Laredo; Mixteco Ballet Folklórico, Houston; TAMIU Ballet Folklórico Juvenil and TAMIU Ballet Folklórico.
