TAMIU’s Martinez Named President of State HR Group

Elizabeth N. Martinez, Texas A&M International University’s (TAMIU) associate vice president for administration, has been named president of the Texas Higher Education Human Resources Association at its recent Annual Conference in Austin.

Martinez said she was honored at the selection and excited about leading the group.

“This is a true honor and I’m really looking forward to the challenge of working with the State’s higher education human resources professionals to help advance our Association and mission. I think we have a year of special challenges and opportunities ahead and the Association is poised to have a true impact on our profession’s continued growth and development,” Martinez said.

The approximately 200-member Association’s mission is to contribute to the advancement of higher education in its fullest and broadest implications and specifically the professional advancement of human resources administration in State-supported senior colleges and universities here.

As president, Martinez assumes full responsibility for all of the general activities of the organization for a full year and works with the president-elect who assumes the leadership at the following annual conference.

Martinez is also the newly elected Secretary for Laredo’s United Way. She has served as Co-chair for the local State Employee Charitable Campaign (SECC) since 2002. This year, the SECC raised over $103,000. The SECC is the combined charity fundraiser organized for State employees and State higher education employees. Martinez has been previously recognized by the United Way with its Distinguished Officer Award and the Dr. Billy F. Cowart Award.

She has served the University for over 27 years. As Associate VP for Administration, Martinez has responsibility for Human Resources, Purchasing, Budget and Payroll operations as well as the University OneCard system.

She holds a B.A. and master's in Public Administration from TAMIU and certification as a Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) by the Human Resource Certification Institute. She has completed the University of Kentucky’s College Business Management Institute’s three-year program. In 2005, she graduated from the Governor’s Executive Development Program and was recipient of the Rising Star Award from the National Association of College and University Business Officers.
