Social Work/ADHD Conference at TAMIU March 27

A Conference focusing on the areas of Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD), Psychotropic Medications, and how children and their families are affected will take place Friday, March 27 at Texas A&M International University (TAMIU).

The 7th Annual Social Work Conference; “ADHD Interventions and Medication – Making the Right Choice will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in TAMIU’s Student Center Ballroom. It is sponsored by TAMIU’s Office of Special Programs.

Conference cost is $65 for tuition and an additional $15 for Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for Licensed Professional Counselors, Social Workers and Teachers.

Conference fee for parents and students will be $20. The last day to register is Wednesday, March 25. Registration at the door will include a $30 late fee.

The Conference will enhance practitioners’ and parents awareness in their interactions with children with ADHD, empower them with knowledge by demonstrating effective skills to manage chaotic behaviors, and how to change their outlook and attitude about working with this special population.

Guest lecturers will include Norma Y. Leben, acclaimed international lecturer and author of “Directive Group Play Therapy” (now in its 8th printing), the Feelings Wheel Game and the DVD, “Anger Work with Children.”

A member of the University of Texas at Austin School of Social Work Advisory Council, she presents annually at conferences in Hong Kong, England, Ireland, Canada and Hawaii, among others. Leben’s topic will be “Nurturing Difficult ADHD Children with Directive Group Play Therapy Techniques.”

Dr. Gilberto Salinas, assistant professor of Psychology at TAMIU, will present “Psycotropic Medications and ADHD.” His Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision with a minor in Marriage and Family Therapy was earned at St. Mary’s University.

He is also a Licensed Professional Counselor and Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor. His research interests include substance abuse treatment with persons of Mexican descent, Familismo, trauma and systems of care.
