Next IBC Lecturers Look at Impact of Africa on Global Economy April 28

Hear what two experts have to say about Africa’s impact on the global economy at the next Texas A&M International University A. R. Sanchez, Jr. School of Business Center for the Study of Western Hemispheric Trade International Bank of Commerce 2009 Keynote Speaker Series Tuesday, April 28 at 7:30 p.m. in the Fernando A. Salinas Lecture Room (WHTC 111).

This lecture is free and open to the public.

Two speakers— Dr. Robert C. Krueger and Jean-Marie Ngendahayo will present “Africa in the 21st Century Global Economy: Challenges and Opportunities.”

Dr. Krueger is a former U.S. Representative and U.S. Senator from Texas, and a former U.S. Ambassador to Burundi and Botswana.

Krueger earned a B.A. from Southern Methodist University, an M.A. from Duke University and a Ph.D. in English literature from Merton College, Oxford.

He currently serves on the board of directors for Viad, a company that provides marketing services in North America, the U.K., Europe and the United Arab Emirates.

In September 2007, his book, “From Bloodshed to Hope in Burundi: Our Embassy Years During Genocide,” was published.

Ngendahayo is currently serving as a visiting scholar in residence at Texas Lutheran University in Seguin, Texas. He teaches courses related to French literature and Africa and lectures on African religion, politics, government, and culture. In addition to a limited knowledge of Spanish, Italian, and Finnish, he is fluent in English, French, Kirundi, and Kiswahili.

Ngendahayo comes from a line of kings and rulers (Ganwa), and has served in some of his nation’s highest offices. But he has also had to flee Burundian dictatorships as he fought for democracy, and to live as a refugee in South Africa, Finland, and the United States.

He attended a private school in Bujumbura, the capital, and received a bachelor’s and a master’s degree from the nation’s only university, the University of Burundi. In his early twenties, he taught in secondary school and served as an advisor to the National Education Ministry. At age 28 he became an information and communications officer for the European Union and the United Nations in Burundi.

This Speaker Series presents practical and targeted lectures imparted by distinguished leaders, recognized experts and outstanding scholars in the trade and business arenas.
