TAMIU Organ Recital Series Features Dykstra Sunday at 4 p.m.

The 2008-2009 Texas A&M International University Organ Recital Series continues this Sunday, April 5 with a performance by organist Dr. Elaine Dykstra at 4 p.m. in the Center for the Fine and Performing Arts Recital Hall.

The event is free and open to the public.

The afternoon program will feature selections by Gigout, Bach, Frescobaldi, Franck, Mendelssohn and Vierne.

Dr. Dykstra received degrees in organ performance from Midwestern State University and the University of Texas at Austin. She was a prizewinner at the William B. Hall Organ Competition in San Antonio while she was a UT student of Frank Speller. 


Dykstra is organist at Tarrytown United Methodist Church in Austin and has been a featured soloist for the Great Organ Series at UT-Austin, the American Guild of Organists Region VII Convention, venues in England including Truro, Bristol and Southwark Cathedrals, St. Mary Redcliffe in Bristol and Oxford Town Hall, historic St. Thomas Fifth Avenue in New York City, Shorter College in Rome, Georgia, and St. Philip’s Cathedral, Atlanta.

She has additional experience as an accompanist and soloist with major choral and instrumental groups in Austin including the Austin Symphony, UT Symphony, the Austin Ballet, Austin Civic Chorus, Austin Vocal Arts Ensemble and the Austin Chamber Soloists, has appeared with the Abilene Classical Chorus and Victoria Bach Festival and is currently associated with the Texas Choral Consort.

Dykstra is a published composer and author of the recently released book “Deducing The Original Sounds of Bach’s Organ Works: An Historical Account of the Musical Capabilities of the Organs That Bach Knew.”

She has participated in master classes with Christoph Albrecht, Marilyn Keiser, Lyn Hubler, Larry Palmer and noted Bach specialist, Peter Williams.

She is a regional officer of the American Guild of Organists, and also serves on the board of the Southeast Historical Keyboard Society.
