Saturday is ‘Space Day’ at TAMIU’s LBV Planetarium

Build and fly a tetrahedral kite, learn about the history of space flight and celebrate space exploration at the Second Annual Space Day, “Human Space Flight: Past, Present and Future,” at the Texas A&M International University Lamar Bruni Vergara Planetarium Saturday, May 2 from 4 – 9 p.m.

“Since its launch in 1997, the Space Day education initiative has evolved into a massive grassroots effort dedicated to the extraordinary achievements, benefits and opportunities in the exploration and use of space,” explained Laura C. Jimenez, associate director, LBV Planetarium.

The ultimate goal is to promote math, science, technology and engineering education by encouraging enthusiasm for the wonders of the universe among young people and to inspire them to continue the work by today’s space explorers.

She added that this year’s activities include a presentation from the U.S. Air Force and the United High School U.L.T.I.M.A.T.E. Robotics Demonstrations and two NASA exhibits, “History of Manned Space Flight” and a 1/25 scale space shuttle stack.

“Visitors will also have the opportunity to build and fly a tetrahedral kite presented by the Vidal M. Treviño School math students,” Jimenez said.

Space Day events are free; general admission to the shows are $5 for adults and $4 for children and TAMIU students, staff and alumni.

Schedule:

4 – 9 p.m. – U.L.T.I.M.A.T.E. Robotics Demonstrations
4 – 9 p.m. – “History of Manned Space Flight” and “Space Shuttle Stack” exhibits
4:30 p.m. – U.S. Air Force presentation
5:30 p.m. – Make and fly a tetrahedral kite
6 p.m. – The Great Space Race
6:30 p.m. – Find it with a GPS
7 p.m. – “One World, One Sky” show
8 p.m. – “Destination Saturn” show
