First Responders’ Course Examines Abnormal Behavior Tuesday

Learn to recognize abnormal behavior at the next professional development course for first responders scheduled for Tuesday, May 12 from 6 – 7 p.m. at Texas A&M International University (TAMIU).

The course, “Abnormal Behavior,” will meet at the TAMIU Lamar Bruni Vergara Science Center, room 102.

“This course was designed for first responders who will encounter in the course of their work a wide variety of ‘abnormal’ behavior. Most first responders have had little or no training in recognizing and responding to abnormal behavior and this course addresses those needs,” explained Dr. Claudia E. San Miguel, director of TAMIU’s criminal justice program.

Instructor for the course is Dr. Bonnie Rudolph, director, TAMIU psychology program.

Dr. Rudolph will describe effective interventions and highlight first responders’ skills in observing, communicating and influencing persons exhibiting abnormal behavior.

“The course will conclude with techniques for stress management and self-care that facilitate first responder resiliency,” said Dr. San Miguel.

This course is presented as part of a comprehensive program designed to provide the training and expertise required for personnel working to secure the nation’s southern border. Partners include TAMIU, the Texas National Guard, Laredo Community College, and various federal, state and local law enforcement agencies.
