The formal dedication of two rooms in Texas A&M International University’s Western Hemispheric Trade Center recognizes the generosity of the Fernando A. Salinas Charitable Trust while also memorializing family members of the beloved Laredo philanthropist.

The event is scheduled Tuesday, May 19 at 6:30 p.m. at the Western Hemispheric Trade Center.

The Salinas Charitable Trust has provided a $1 million gift pledge that is being matched by the A. R. Sanchez Jr. Challenge Grant.

In addition to members of the University faculty and administration, the event will include Salinas Charitable Trust trustee Javier B. Santos and other honored guests. Ill health precludes the Trust’s namesake, Mr. Salinas, from being present.

The ceremonies will dedicate Room 111 as the Fernando A. Salinas Lecture Hall and Room 116 as the Roberto Benavides and Beatriz Salinas Benavides (both deceased) Lecture Hall.

Roberto Benavides, a former County Judge, was married to Beatriz Salinas Benavides, also Fernando Salinas’ older sister. A third room, a library facility, has been named in memory of Salinas’ deceased aunts Elvira de la Chica and Amelia de la Chica Vela and her husband, Serapio Vela.
