This summer, University students are stepping on to campus early to get a peek at their future this Fall.

New Texas A&M International University students are taking part in “Dusty Camp,” a new student overnight orientation program.

One camp was held in June. The remaining Dusty Camps are scheduled July 16-17, and Aug. 6-7. New TAMIU students can register online for “Dusty Camp” by visiting tamiu.edu and clicking on “Current Students” and “New Student Orientation.” Space is limited to 250 students per event.

From a private concert with TAMIU president Ray Keck and a Texas-style BBQ to a special night work out and opportunity to get to know roommates, “Dusty Camp” helps new students to transition to University life, said organizer Miguel Treviño, associate director, Office of Student Affairs.

“This is a required program for all first-time entering TAMIU freshmen and is designed to give them the necessary tools to be successful as they begin their studies here,” Treviño explained.

Treviño noted that the participants’ over-night stay allows all to get a full University experience. “They have the opportunity to meet their fellow classmates, learn about expectations, and spend the night at the Residential Learning Community to absorb University life to its fullest. The experience also enables them to interact with professors and students in a collaborative setting that provides valuable insight on success inside and outside the classroom,” he explained.

Students have a chance to explore the campus, learn about available campus programs and services and the numerous student organizations available to them. They’ll also meet professors and students from their planned major field of study.

If they’ve not done so already, participants can register for classes, check financial aid status, reserve textbooks, get a parking permit, student ID and email and sign up for the DustyALRT, the campus’ emergency notification system.

The Fall Semester at TAMIU begins Monday, Aug. 24.
