Housing Occupancy Soars at TAMIU for Fall

Housing occupancy rates are soaring at Texas A&M International University with one venue already at over 100% occupancy and the other at over 92%.

“We’re definitely seeing a rush on housing and we’re especially encouraging our first year students to secure their housing plans as soon as possible,” said Trevor Liddle, TAMIU director of Housing and Residence Life.

Move-in weekend begins Friday at the TAMIU Center for the Fine and Performing Arts with check-in from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Saturday, August 22, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Move-in information is available at tamiu.edu/housing. Classes begin Monday, Aug. 24.

The UV, on the campus’ west side, is a 250-bed apartment-style facility for sophomore students and above who have made their initial campus connections. UV students enjoy the privacy of their own bedroom, a full kitchen, and all the amenities of home. Students with small children also make the UV a good choice for living on campus. UV living is more independent, but includes a safety net of resident assistants, educational and social programming events and the convenience of no utilities to set up in a villa-inspired setting.

The RLC is a more traditional 436 -bed residence hall complex located on the campus’ east side, where most students begin their University experience, establish study partners and enduring friendships. It features four residence halls designed to help students’ transition to the University environment. It focuses on small groups in an effort to help students make campus connections that lead to success.

RLC residents have a meal plan, a resident assistant (RA) peer mentor assigned to a specific area, public and private study areas, a large well-equipped computer lab, four community kitchens and a “green” laundry facility. Other amenities include a swimming pool, sand volleyball, full-court basketball, billiards room and social lounges.

Liddle said both facilities share a commitment to a complete University experience.

“Today's student housing incorporates learning in all aspects of the living environment and is committed to making a rich student life part of the complete University experience. Facilities are walking distance to class and other campus services are easily accessed. A complete Residence Life staff is on hand and Residence Life Directors and student staff are committed to assisting in developing residents’ academic, social, and personal growth,” he explained.

He noted that much of the University’s life is centered on the TAMIU Student Center, home to a vibrant student life, two food areas, a bookstore and a variety of student-oriented services. It is also home to over 40 student clubs and organizations, a state of the art theatre, ballroom and a variety of conference rooms. A new Student Success Center is now under construction and a theatre is nearing completion in the Center for the Fine and Performing Arts.

Also central to the University’s student life is an impressive athletics program that includes recreational sports and fitness activities in the new Kinesiology and Wellness Recreation Center and 11 team sports, all part of the Heartland Conference of NCAA Division II.

American Campus Communities (ACC) has collaborated with TAMIU since 1997 to provide housing accommodations and professional management services to the campus.
