Business Workshops Set by TAMIU-SBDC

The Texas A&M International University Small Business Development Center (TAMIU-SBDC) will sponsor several workshops during the month of August.

Friday, Aug. 21: Web Page Designing Part I: Creating a Basic Web site workshop will be offered from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon at Dr. Billy F. Cowart Hall, room 114. Fee is $20. This hands-on workshop series spans the entire process of building a simple Web site from the ground up, with plenty of pointers and reference material. Alejandro Quetzeri, who has 10 years of experience in building Web sites and is owner of WSI Certified Internet Consultants, will lead the series covering: definition and use of the Internet and World Wide Web, all about Google, Yahoo and MSN search engines, e-mail, domain names and creating your own domain name and home pages, including about us, product and services and contact us page components.

Tuesday, Aug. 25 Legal Issues for Micro-enterprises, is a free of charge seminar that will be held from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Classroom location will be provided with registration confirmation. The seminar will be conducted by Texas Rio Grande Legal Aid Assistance to Microenterprise Project (LAMP) staff attorney Amber VanSchuyver and will focus on various legal aspects of the small business. Topics to be covered include contracts, employment, advertising and promotion laws, taxes, Health and Safety Laws, and finance and commercial landlord and tenant laws.

Wednesday, Aug. 26: Quarterly and Year End Reporting Workshop will be offered from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 pm. Classroom location will be provided with registration confirmation. Fee is $20. Business owners/employers have specific payroll responsibilities that are required by government agencies -- these agencies can be federal, state or local. Some of these responsibilities include, but are not limited to, withholding amounts from employees’ compensation to cover income tax, Social Security, Medicare, and other payments. Instructor Gladys Rangel will help owners/employers become familiarized with basic concepts of payroll management. Topics to be covered include employment requirements, pay requirements, payroll calculation, depositing taxes, quarterly report preparation and year-end report preparation.

Thursday, Aug. 27: Workers Comp 101- Overview for Texas Employers from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 pm in Western Hemispheric Trade Center Fernando A. Salinas Lecture Room (WHTC 111). The Texas Department of Insurance, Division of Workers’ Compensation, will provide a comprehensive overview of the Texas Worker’s Compensation System and Return-to-Work program. Topics to be covered include: roles and responsibilities of system participants, functions of the Office of Injured Employee Counsel, functions and services provided by the TDI-DWC to system participants, examination of medical and income benefits in a claim and the process of resolving disputes about those benefits, and how to successfully return employees to work after a workplace injury. A $25 fee includes materials and lunch.

Thursday, Aug. 27: Strategic Management Learning System (SMLS) Human Resource Management workshop will be offered from 5:30 to 7:30 pm in Western Hemispheric Trade Center (WHTC) room 125. Angelo Piccirillo, SBDC business economic/development coordinator, will cover the five-step process of thoughtful inventory management. A $20 fee will include workbook.
