High school students can get a head start on math and science with the Texas A&M International University Upward Bound Program. The Program, only open to 50 students, is scheduled to start Saturday, Sept. 19, 2009.

“The Upward Bound Math and Science Program prepares high school students to enter post-secondary programs of education that will lead to careers in the fields of math and science,” said Julissa Garza, coordinator, pre-college programs.

Program participants meet Saturdays during the school year from 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

The Program is free of charge thanks to a $1 million federal grant that was announced by U.S. Congressman Henry Cuéllar earlier this month.

Applications are available through the TAMIU Office of Special Programs in the Student Center (SC), room 118, by phone at 326.2700 and by e-mail at diana.aquino@tamiu.edu

“Only completed applications will be taken or until all 50 participants have been selected,” Garza said.

To be eligible, students must be U.S. citizens or legal residents, attend an LISD or UISD high school, meet federal low-income guidelines, have an interest in pursuing a degree in science, technology, engineering or math and be first-generation college bound.

Students will receive academic instruction in math, science, English and writing, academic guidance and tutoring, career exploration, college admissions assistance, counseling services, foreign language studies, hands on education activities, laboratory experience, and PSAT/SAT preparation and participate in field trips, college visits and social and cultural activities.

In addition to the 26-week program, there is also an additional six-week residential program.

Students also earn a stipend for the academic year and/or summer components. Some students may be eligible for additional support services.

For more information, contact Garza at jgarza@tamiu.edu, call 326.2702 or visit offices in the Student Center, room 118.

University office hours are 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., Monday – Friday.
