A graduate degree can improve one’s chances of earning a higher salary and Texas A&M International University’s Graduate Studies Open House Thursday, Sept. 24 will show students how to embark on a graduate program.

The event, free and open to the public, is scheduled from 6-8 p.m. at the Student Center Ballroom.

Those attending can receive information on graduate academic programs in the Colleges of Arts and Sciences, Education, Nursing and Health Sciences and the A.R. Sanchez, Jr. School of Business.

Suzanne Alford, associate director of the Office of Graduate Studies and Research, said graduate school provides a perfect opportunity for one to enhance his or her career.

“Higher education is the smartest investment one can make because you continue to enrich your knowledge and make advances in your career,” Alford said.

According to the results of a study released by the U.S. Census, adults with a master’s degree or higher earned an annual salary four times more than those with less than a high school diploma – about $82,000 compared to $21,000. Those with a bachelor’s degree earned an annual salary of about $57,000 and those with a high school diploma earned about $31,000.

At the Open House, prospective students can also expect to receive information about financial assistance for graduate students and meet financial aid representatives as well as faculty members from each of the Colleges, Alford said.

Information will also be available on scholarships, fellowships and assistantship opportunities under the Lamar Bruni Vergara Educational Fund, Alford said.

Application forms for graduate school may be filled out at the event, Alford said.

“Our message to everyone is to invest in themselves by pursuing a higher education because the result is a reward that will last for a lifetime,” Alford said.
