TAMIU Sanchez Lecture Series Brings Mexican Journalist Cacho Oct. 21

Mexican author, journalist, feminist and human rights advocate Lydia Cacho will share her experiences with “Censorship and the Mexican Press” at the first installment of the Texas A&M International University A. R. Sanchez, Sr. Distinguished Lecture Series scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 21 at 7 p.m. in the TAMIU Center for the Fine and Performing Arts Recital Hall.

Admission to the Lecture is free and open to the public.

For her work exposing human rights violations and child pornography and prostitution in México Cacho has been thrown in jail, harassed and threatened. Despite the danger she faces, Cacho struggles on.

Born in México City to a Mexican father and a French feminist psychologist mother, she learned about poverty, injustice and sexism after she tagged along with her mother to the slums that surrounded México City, where her mother worked.

Through a shelter she founded in Cancún, México, Cacho continues the work she saw her mother do so many years ago.

Cacho also continues to blaze her own path. She was the first woman who took a case to the Mexican Supreme Court. The Court declared that the content of her book, “Demons of Eden,” an exposé on sex trafficking and child pornography in México, is truthful. The Court also ruled that that she was detained and tortured as a result of corruption.

Cacho has also written hundreds of news articles, a book of poetry, a novel and other nonfiction work, including several essay books on human rights and has won numerous professional awards. She studied humanities at the Sorbonne and speaks four languages—Spanish, French, Portuguese and English.

Even though her life has been threatened many times, she refuses to leave her country and the people who have turned to her for help.
