LPO Concert ‘Energy Unleashed’ Sunday at 3 p.m. at TAMIU

The Laredo Philharmonic Orchestra continues its 30th Anniversary Season, “Musical Pearls,” with the upcoming concert “Energy Unleashed,” at the Texas A&M International University Center for the Fine and Performing Arts Recital Hall this Sunday, Oct. 25. The concert begins promptly at 3 p.m.

Tickets are $25 for adults and $17 for seniors. Special three-concert packages are available for purchase. Admission is free for students with ID.

“I am incredibly excited by this program that will bring something familiar, something new and something that may not be familiar to everyone, but audiences will certainly want to hear more of it following the performance,” said Brendan Townsend, director, LPO.

“I and all the musicians look forward to sharing this wonderful music on Sunday,” Townsend said.

He added that Sunday’s program will open with Tomaso Giovanni Albinoni’s unbelievably beautiful Adagio in G minor for Organ and Strings featuring TAMIU president Dr. Ray Keck on the Sharkey-Corrigan Organ.

Following that will be the Cello Concerto written by Behzad Ranjbaran. Featured cello soloist is Wesley Baldwin, associate professor of cello, University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

“We welcome the return of my dear friend cellist Wesley Baldwin to Laredo following his incredible performance of the Dvorak Cello Concerto in May 2007. We will engage in a conductor chat during intermission to discuss the intricacies and challenges of learning a new concerto such as this,” Townsend said.

Following intermission and concluding the concert will be Antonin Leopold Dvorak’s Symphony No. 7 in D minor Op. 70. According to Townsend, famed music critic Michael Steinberg described this symphony as “a true and worthy inheritor of the D minor tradition” on par with the famous 9th symphony of Beethoven or Mozart’s Piano Concert No. 20.

The next concert, “Anticipated Return,” is scheduled at TAMIU Sunday, Jan. 24, 2010.
