A gripping story of family and betrayal set partly in the present and 19th century Texas is the focus of the film, “Propiedad Ajena,” (Others’ Property) to be presented for the first time in Laredo Thursday, Oct. 22 at Texas A&M International University.

The film showing, free and open to the community, will be in Spanish with English subtitles, starting at 6:30 p.m. at the TAMIU Center for the Fine and Performing Arts Theatre.

Organized by the Consulate General of México and TAMIU, the film showing is part of a series of events commemorating México’s 200 years of independence from Spain and 100 years since the Revolution. The two Mexican holidays will be observed in 2010.

“Propiedad Ajena,” a Luis Vélez fim, is based on the novel by Mexican Ambassador Enrique Berruga Filloy. It tells the story of Miranda Sámano, who embarks on a journey to San Antonio to discover her family roots and the way they were deposed of their property in Texas in the 19th century. The plot thickens when she meets and falls in love with Matt Crossman, who happens to hold the key to the secret of the Sámanos’ disposal from their native land.

Ambassador Berruga Filloy will be present at the event, and will have a book signing, as well as hold a brief question and answer session at the end of the film showing. A reception, open to everyone, will follow.

Event sponsors include the Consulate General of México, TAMIU, Instituto Cultural Mexicano de Laredo, Webb County Heritage Foundation, Southern Distributing Company and La Posada Hotel.
