With Thanksgiving soon a memory, it'll soon be time to hear sleigh bells ring and guitar strings strum at Texas A&M International University Eighth Annual “Guitarras de Navidad” Friday, Dec. 4 at 8 p.m. in the Center for the Fine and Performing Arts (CFPA) Recital Hall.

Sponsored by the TAMIU College of Arts and Sciences, the Department of Fine and Performing Arts and co-sponsored by the Women’s City Club, this event is free and open to the public. A donation, however, toward a special student travel abroad fund to study Spanish and flamenco guitar in Madrid and Seville, Spain will be greatly appreciated.

The program draws from the sounds of the season and features the TAMIU Classical Guitar Ensemble, directed by Dr. Gilberto D. Soto, professor of Music Education.

“Among the brand new selections the ensemble will perform are special guitar arrangements of the allegro from ‘Concerto in G’ plus the largo from the ‘Winter’ from the ‘Four Seasons’ by Antonio Vivaldi, ‘String Quartet in D major’ by G. P. Telemann, ‘The March’ from the ‘Nutcracker Suite’ by P. I. Tchaikovsky, the Hallelujah Chorus from the ‘Messiah’ by G. F. Handel and others,” said Dr. Soto.
The ensemble will also present special Spanish arrangements of popular Christmas classics such as “Jingle Bells,” “The Little Drummer Boy,” “Angels We Have Heard on High,” “Silent Night,” and “O Come All Ye Faithful.”

A presentation of “Ave Verum Corpus” by W.A. Mozart includes a special performance by the TAMIU Choir, directed by Dana Crabtree, TAMIU instructor of music and voice.

Members of the TAMIU Guitar Ensemble include Emmanuel Pruneda, Juan M. Peña, Marisela González, Manuel Torres González, Marissa Treviño, Edith Salazar, Marco Lopez, Daniel Arambula, Santiago Moreno, Mark Martínez, Jorge García and David J. Dancause.

Members of the TAMIU Choir include Joel Bazan-Gomez, Gilda Caballero, Alexandria De Anda, Ricardo Holguin, Juventino Lozano, Stephen Miller, Ashley Montemayor, Marisol Muñoz, Rosalinda Reyes, Erica Salinas, José Sánchez, Stephanie Solis, Roxanna Vasquez and Victor Vedia.
