Members of the South Texas Historical Association (STHA) will come to Laredo and Texas A&M International University for their 56th Fall Meeting Saturday, Nov. 7.

The group, headed by STHA president Homero Vera, will participate in presentations and discussions on South Texas history.

They will convene Friday for a reception and dinner at TAMIU’s Casa Ortiz downtown and hear from TAMIU professor of history Dr. Stanley Green and Margarita Araiza, Webb County Heritage Foundation executive director. The group will learn about Laredo’s history, Casa Ortiz and the Villa Antigua Project. Participants will also tour the Border Heritage Museum nearby.

On Saturday, Southern Methodist University doctoral student George T. Diaz will present “Smugglers in Dangerous Times: Illicit Trade in the lower Rio Grande Borderlands: 1910-1920.”

TAMIU’s Dr. Carlos E. Cuellar, associate professor of history, will offer a presentation on TAMIU’s “The Guerrero Viejo Archives Preservation Project” while Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library special collections librarian Jeanette M. Hatcher will provide information on the Library’s Special Collections.

The South Texas Historical Association was founded in 1954 "to encourage the organization and to aid in the development of local historical societies and to discover, collect, preserve, and publish historical records and data relating to South Texas, and with special emphasis on the Tamaulipan background and the colony of Nuevo Santander." Its archives are housed at Texas A&M University-Kingsville.
