Learn how to mobilize your community to help prevent crime at the upcoming Texas National Guard Professional Development course, “Community Mobilization,” offered by the Texas A&M International University Border Studies Institute Tuesday, Jan. 26 at 12 p.m. in Western Hemispheric Trade Center, room 224.

This course is free and open to the public, but first responders are highly encouraged to attend.

Lunch will be provided.

“This course will focus on community crime prevention programs and the philosophy and goals of watch programs in the U.S. such as Neighborhood Watch, which has not been successful in reducing or preventing crime,” explained Dr. Claudia E. San Miguel, TAMIU assistant professor of criminal justice and course instructor.

“Participants will learn suggestions for community mobilization and explore community crime prevention strategies in other countries,” Dr. San Miguel continued.

A native of Laredo, Texas, San Miguel earned her B.S. and M.S. in criminal justice from TAMIU and her Ph.D., also in criminal justice, from Sam Houston State University.

This course is presented as part of a comprehensive program designed to provide the training and expertise required for personnel working to secure the nation’s southern border. Partners include TAMIU, the Texas National Guard, Laredo Community College, and various federal, state and local law enforcement agencies.

Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education training hours will be awarded to law enforcement that attend.
