The Texas A&M International University Small Business Development Center (TAMIU-SBDC) will sponsor several workshops this month.

Friday, Jan. 22: “Keeping the Books: Record-keeping Basics” workshop will meet from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Western Hemispheric Trade Center, room 126. This workshop will provide simple principles to help attendees understand bookkeeping basics. Instructor Gladys Rangel, certified business advisor, will present a comprehensive hands-on tool that will help set up an effective bookkeeping system and keep the right records, maintain records required to prevent tax time disasters, and maximize profits. A $20 fee will include Laura Pinzon’s seventh edition of “Keeping the Books: Basic Record-keeping and Accounting for the Successful Small Business,” a $50 value.

Tuesday, Jan. 26: “Quarterly and Year-End Report Preparation” will meet from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. WHTC 126. A $20 fee includes a workbook. The hands-on workshop is designed to help owners/employers become familiar with basic concepts of payroll management. Payroll is an essential business practice like sales and customer service. Incorrect withholdings or payroll tax filings can lead to government penalties. Topics to be covered include: employment requirements, pay requirements, payroll calculation, depositing taxes, quarterly report preparation and year end report preparation.

Wednesday, Jan. 27: “Understanding Financial Statements” will be held from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. in WTHC 125. A $20 fee will include a workbook. The instructor will help participants understand their financial statements. One statement cannot diagnose a company's financial health, but by putting several statements together, one can make smart financial, investment and management decisions. For lending purposes, statements will help to determine if one can afford to pay a loan, the loan amount, the loan term (number of years), which assets one should buy versus which assets should be financed, and what collateral is available to secure a loan.

Thursday, Jan. 28: “Understanding Credit and Budgeting" will be held from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. in WHTC 126. A $20 fee will include a workbook. Instructor Norma Rodriguez will go over credit reporting myths, disputing inaccuracies, rebuilding credit and debt management.
