‘Sole Music Concert’ Featuring Charles Holt Comes to TAMIU Feb. 4

As part of its celebration of Black History Month, Texas A&M International University, in cooperation with Humanities Texas and The Laredo Morning Times, will present “Charles Holt: A Sole Music Concert,” on Thursday, Feb. 4 at 7 p.m. in TAMIU’s Center for the Fine and Performing Arts’ Theatre.

Holt, who has starred in some of the most celebrated productions in American theatre history, including “Jesus Christ Superstar,” “Smokey Joe’s Café,” and “The Lion King,” describes “A Sole Music Concert” as a “journey through an American quilt of songs.”

Holt was the first African American to appear in the European tour of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” and has appeared in guest starring and lead roles in “Law & Order: Criminal Intent,” “All My Children,” the award-winning independent film “Anne B. Real” and the thought-provoking comedy, “Ed’s Trip.”

For the past eight seasons he has received national acclaim and rave reviews for his portrayals of 20 distinct characters in his one-man stage play “Black Boy,” based on the life of noted author Richard Wright. Holt performed the work in Laredo at TAMIU in 2006.

He has also created acclaimed one-man shows on American Civil Rights activist, historian and sociologist W. E. B. Du Bois (“The Smoke King”) and is creating a one-man stage presentation based on the life of George Washington Carver, American scientist, botanist, educator and inventor. Among his most recent works is “America, The Black, The Beautiful,” also a one-man play with original music and multi-media.

He also hosts seminars and workshops on campuses around the country and in 2006 was named the recipient of Rhodes College’s Distinguished Alumnus of the Year Award for outstanding loyalty and dedication to his alma mater and the greater good of the world community.

A recording artist for Agape Media International, his debut album, “I Am,” is an eclectic crafting of songs anchored in love, healing and freedom. His autobiographical book, “The Voice That Matters,” detailing his voyage from former NFL-bound football player and corporate marketing specialist to finding his voice on stage, was published in 2009.

Holt will also offer a Master Class for students on Friday, Feb. 5, at 10 a.m.
