More than 100 Texas A&M International University students are taking advantage of the beautiful spring weather to bring improvements to their campus during the TAMIU Student Government Association’s (SGA) “The Big Event” March 27.

“ ‘The Big Event’ is a one-day community service project that began at Texas A&M University in 1983. It has now become a tradition at all of The Texas A&M University System campuses,” explained Gerardo Alva, director, Office of Student Affairs.

“Last year, the students focused their efforts on clearing the area by the University Village pond, cutting down plants and weeds. This year, they want to continue working on that area and transform it to a usable, recreational pond,” he continued.

With generous support from Lowes and the TAMIU Physical Plant, students plan to plant pecan trees around the pond to provide shade for two picnic tables, a barbecue pit and release bass and catfish into the pond.

“Not only will it expose the pond area, it will create an area where students can relax with their fellow classmates, families and friends,” Alva added.

Anyone interested in volunteering should contact Ana C. Castañeda, SGA vice president, at anacastaneda@dusty.tamiu.edu
